The Dilemma of Modern Man

I have spent a lot of time in hills and forests where the green surroundings and pine scented air refreshes and caresses mind and soul. I wish I could live that way all the time but that is not quite possible because as a modern human being I am also used to the services and facilities that are available in modern cities. I suppose this is a dilemma that many others share with me. Therefore now I am back in my home at Jaipur. Presently because it is the monsoon season it is quite green and cool here too, but there are homes and homes, cement and concrete all over for miles and miles all around me and I am already wishing I were back amongst miles and miles of trees, fresh water lakes and mountain streams.

I'm very glad to see you back, Ashok, & hope you will soon have time to write up more new thoughts.

Were you not also glad to be home again, though?

Which part of Jaipur do you live in? I've been looking at photos on Google maps and it looks very pretty to me! But I suppose they only show the pretty parts. They haven't yet taken continuous pictures of the streets so that you can see the actual house where someone lives (my house has been done that way!)

Hello Vincent. Nice to see you. Yes Vincent home is always delightful to be back to. I have a pretty home and it is in a nice part of Jaipur, and the home is large enough for a spare vacant guest room that is ready at all times incase you ever decided to visit be my guest.

Jaipur has pretty parts and messy parts. The historical parts are pretty because Jaipur was a rich kingdom around hundred years ago and some of the new parts are nice and well built because over the last decade or so there has been new money through recent economic progress. My home is in the new area and I have very rich neighbors, much richer than me. In my case I had bought the lot a long time ago (some thirty years ago when it was not so expensive).

But then I always miss nature too and have been caught in this dilemma perhaps all through my life. If I was young and had to choose a career all over again I would join the forest service of India.

I live on the southern side of Jaipur. If you can trace the road between Jaipur and Ajmer on the google map then it is near the southern section of the road just before the town ends. I have looked up my home on the map and can see the street and outline of the home.

Ashok,

From one point of view, it is dilemma, but from other point of view, it is blessing. I have similar problem/blessing. It shifts depending on my mood. When I see it in someone, it becomes blessing, and when I see it in myself, it is dilemma. What do you think?

Hello Keiko, good to hear from you after a gap. I agree with what you
have written.

The best practice is to be thankful for and enjoy whatever one has at the moment. At the same time one must work towards a change or improvement if it is feasible with reasonable effort and if the change is perceived as better.

Life is full of choices where one loses something while gaining something else e.g. one loses privacy if one gains fame, a holiday on the ocean might mean missing one in the mountains, more leisure and freedom may imply choosing less wealth, a dinner of fish might lead to missing another of chicken and so on.

Welcome back, Ashok. I always enjoy the feeling of being back home too. I like your reminder to appreciate each moment and how you also mention when we lose something, we gain something and vice versa.

We’re in the process of thinking of looking at an apartment to move into when our lease is up. It’s only across the street, but we see that there are small balconies attached, so we would at least have one more space—and one to the outside. Many things to consider and a change is a change, so it’s a good feeling and also a little scary.

Thanks for your comments Rebb.
I understand whatyou mean when you the change is a little scary. Changing homes always is for many. However since the apartment is just across the street the change will be easy and I am sure you would find it delightful once the change is made.
